FASTING SIX DAYS AFETR THE DAY OF EID UL-FITR

On the authority of Abu Ayoub al-Ansaari that the Messenger of Allah – may the peace and salutations of Allah be upon him – said: Whoever fasts Ramadhan and follows it with six (fasts) of Shawwal, it will be as if he fasted the whole year. [Saheeh Muslim: Nos. 1164]

Imaam an-Nawawi mentioned in his explanation of Saheeh Muslim:

“It is recommended to fast the six days consecutively after the day of Eid al-Fitr, however, if he was to spread (the fasting six days throughout the month), or postponed them from the beginning of the month until the end of the month, the virtue of following (the month of Ramadan with six days of Shawaal) would still be achieved since it can be said about him that he followed (Ramdan) with six days of Shawaal”.
